What is the MBS E-Invoicing System?

Overview

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) is introducing the Merchant Buyer Solution (MBS) — an e-Invoicing system designed to modernize fiscal and transactional processes in Nigeria, while promoting transparency and accountability in tax management.

Leveraging the Universal Business Language (UBL) framework, the system facilitates the seamless creation, validation, and submission of electronic invoices while integrating with key national data entities like CAC, NIBSS, CBN, and NCS.

What is an E-Invoicing System?

The e-Invoicing System is a digital platform that enables taxpayers to generate, submit, and validate electronic invoices. It simplifies the interaction between buyers, sellers, and NRS while ensuring compliance with Nigeria's tax regulations.

Purpose

  • Accuracy: Guarantee that all invoices submitted to NRS are accurate and compliant with adopted standards
  • Cross-border Trade: Facilitate cross-border trade, opening businesses to global markets
  • Financial Services: Enhance the expansion of financial services
  • Invoice Factoring: Improve invoice factoring capabilities
  • Efficiency: Reduce errors, delays, and inefficiencies in the invoicing process

Key Features

  • Support for various invoice types (standard invoices, debit notes, credit notes, refunds)
  • Integration with Service Providers (SI, APP) and ERP systems
  • Automated tax calculation and HSN code population
  • Digital validation and signing
  • Invoice encryption for secure transmission
  • Electronic invoicing exchange via Access Point Providers

MBS Registration

Important: MBS registration is only for Service Providers (System Integrators and Access Point Providers). Taxpayers do not register on MBS directly — they interact with the e-Invoicing system through their chosen Service Provider.
